2025 Premier’s Reading Challenge
Principal’s Message
2025 School Explicit Improvement Agenda (EIA):
Curriculum – English
Multi-tiered Approach to support
Curriculum – Math V9
Dear Miami State School Community,
What a wonderful start to Term 2. We have many events occurring this term and it is important that you stay up-to-date with all the information. Please ensure all school communication channels are engaged with, whether that be Q Parents, Seesaw, school newsletter or the official school Facebook page, to keep up-to-date with all activity arrangements to avoid disappointment for your child.
P&C Mother’s Day Stall
Our wonderful P&C have once again conducted a Mother’s Day Stall for our students to be able to purchase gifts for the special female caregivers in their lives. All profits go towards school fundraising projects which include upgrades to school facilities and classroom resources. Your support of our P&C fundraising efforts is much appreciated. A very big thank you to our parents who generously volunteer their time to not only plan and order all the stock, set up and pack up the stall, staff the stall, but who also actively support our students to select their special gifts for their loved ones. We appreciate you!
Prep in 2026
Enrolments for 2026 Prep year are now open. Please contact the school to express your interest. We do have some marvellous open days planned. Miami State School is an amazing school. Tell your family and friends. Book your place for 2026. All welcome.
2025 Premier’s Reading Challenge
This year, Miami State School is participating in the 2025 Premier’s Reading Challenge. We look forward to sharing in the excitement about reading and encourage all students to take part.
To successfully complete the challenge, students must meet the minimum requirement of books read (or read to them, in Prep to Year 2) by the due date.

Year Level | Number of Books |
Prep to Year 2 | Read or experience 20 books |
Year 3 to 4 | 20 books |
Year 5 to 6 | 15 books |
While there is no compulsory reading list for the challenge, book lists have been developed by teacher librarians in conjunction with the Department of Education’s (DoE) State Schools – Curriculum branch, to help students, teachers, parents and guardians select age-appropriate reading material. The book lists are available on the PRC website and have been divided into year level groups, or by language. Students are encouraged to select a range of fiction and non-fiction books suited to their reading ability. Students are welcome to read books from previous years' book lists and from lists for other year levels. Digital reader record forms can be found here.
Please take notes of the key dates for the challenge below. Forms can be returned to classroom teachers.

Deputy Principal’s Message
Welcome to Week 4
The weeks are surely moving along fast now. We are about to head into the second half of the term, the assessment and reporting phase of the term. It is important that attendance remains a priority (unless your child(ren) are unwell).

PBL
Respectful | Safe | Learner |

Don’t forget, Miami State School is Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) school. Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) brings together the whole-school community to contribute to developing a positive, safe and supportive learning culture. The framework assists schools to improve social, emotional, behavioural and academic outcomes for children and young people.
Parent and community involvement
Parents and the wider community play an important role in creating a safe and supportive school environment. Schools benefit when school staff engage in regular positive, respectful interactions with students and their family.
Schools involve parents and the school community in developing the Student Code of Conduct. This helps to align the behaviour expectations of the school to community expectations and means everyone shares an understanding of what is expected.
Successful schools clearly communicate their expectations for student behaviour to students and their parents at enrolment and throughout the student's enrolment. Data, information and strategies are consistently shared with all parents.
Schools implementing Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) actively seek input from parents and the community. Parents may take turns being on the PBL leadership team or may be involved in surveying other parents about the ways the school supports student learning, wellbeing and behaviour.
When parents and school staff work together, student outcomes are improved. For example, studies have shown that school attendance, academic results and student behaviour and wellbeing are improved when schools work collaboratively with families.
Families can be involved in PBL implementation in many ways. For example, parents may be involved in creating a matrix for expected behaviours at home aligning with the school’s expectations. Families have the best knowledge of their child and are therefore important partners in the development of individual support plans for students.
Until next term,
Ben Edmunds
Deputy Principal Year 4 - 6

Using Routines to Encourage Children’s Cooperation
Getting kids to cooperate—whether it's toddlers resisting bedtime, school-aged children complaining about meals, or teens refusing tasks—can be tough. A simple yet powerful strategy to encourage cooperation is using routines.
What is a Routine?
A routine is a structured, predictable sequence of tasks or activities, like bedtime steps or morning preparation. Set by caregivers, routines help create stability and ease daily stress, making it easier for children to know what to expect.
Benefits of Routines
- Increased cooperation: Predictable routines reduce power struggles and conflict.
- Better mental health: Less daily stress helps children feel calmer and more secure.
- Life skills development: Routines promote independence and responsibility.
Tips for Using Routines
- Be consistent: Repeat the same steps daily—children may need up to three weeks to fully adopt a routine.
- Set positive limits: Use boundaries (e.g., set bedtimes, screen time rules) to guide behaviour.
- Use clear, age-appropriate instructions: Visual aids, lists, or verbal prompts can help depending on the child’s needs.
- Support based on ability: Tailor help depending on the child’s age, development, or disability.
- Praise and encourage: Reinforce participation with positive feedback or rewards.
By introducing even small routines, families can reduce daily struggles and build stronger, more cooperative relationships with their children.
For more ideas on using routines or helping children cooperate, you might like to check out one of Triple P’s online parenting programs. - Years 3 and 4 must read at least 20 books
- Years 5 to 9 must read at least 15 books.
