2025 School Explicit Improvement Agenda (EIA):
Curriculum – English
Multi-tiered Approach to support
Curriculum – Math V9
Dear Miami State School Community,
As we celebrate the many successes of our students, I want to highlight the brilliant learning and positive behaviour that continue to flourish within our school. It's been an exciting time, especially for our Performing Arts Department, who have embarked on a very busy Eisteddfod season. I’m thrilled to share that our choir ensembles have been awarded 1st place (gold) and 3rd place (silver), and our musical students have proudly secured 1st place and a gold. With these fantastic achievements setting the tone, our strings and dance are now gearing up for their upcoming performances in the next few weeks. We’re all eager to see their hard work and dedication shine on stage!
2025 School Opinion Survey – Parents/Caregivers
The suite of School Opinion Surveys is undertaken each year by the Department of Education to obtain opinions about our school from families, school staff and students in target year levels (5, 6, 8 and 11). The surveys will help identify what we are doing well, and understand where we can improve. The survey invitation was e emailed in the week beginning 21 July and is titled School Opinion Survey for parents and caregivers, 2025.
- Each school family will receive one email invitation from the Department of Education to complete the Parent/Caregiver Survey. The survey is anonymous, and the results are not reported in ways that an individual’s response can be identified by the school.
- Parents/Caregivers are encouraged to complete the survey. The survey can be completed via computers, tablets or smart phones with an internet connection.
- Parents/caregivers who experience difficulties accessing the survey can request a new survey from the School Opinion Survey team via email schoolopinionsurvey@qed.qld.gov.au.
It’s important that as many parents/caregivers as possible complete the survey, so we would appreciate if members of this committee would raise awareness of this survey with other parents and caregivers. Can’t find your invitation? If your family has more than one parent/caregiver, check that they haven’t received the invitation and/or check your junk email folder.

Deputy Principal’s Message
Welcome to week 6
It has been a very busy couple of weeks at Miami with lots of teaching, learning and assessing happening in the classrooms. It has been great being in the classrooms and seeing the students engaged, working hard and trying their best with their learning. We have two 4-day weeks coming up soon, so before we know it the September holidays will be upon us and hopefully with it, some warmer weather.

PBL
Don’t forget we are a PBL school; this means that as a school we explicitly teach the behaviours we would like to see form a part of our everyday routines and reward students for following these expectations of being a Respectful, Safe Learner. Some of our most recent focus areas have been
- Being respectful by using the toilets appropriately
- Using the Miami 5
- Being a learner by going straight to the appropriate area when the bell rings
- Being respectful by wearing the correct school uniform.

Before School Routines
We are reaching out to seek your support regarding a matter that has become increasingly noticeable in recent weeks. A number of students have been arriving at school after the morning bell and following the official roll marking period. In many of these cases, late arrivals have been linked to time spent at Pizzey Park and/or the Skate Park/Pump Track before school.
While we recognise these facilities are a valuable community resource and a popular place for students to socialise and stay active, it is essential that this does not interfere with their punctual arrival at school. Being at school on time—ready for learning from the first bell—is a vital part of setting students up for a successful day.
We kindly ask that you speak with your child about the importance of arriving at school before the bell, especially if they are spending time at Pizzey Park in the morning. If they are choosing to visit the skate park in the morning, please ensure they are aware of their responsibility to leave with enough time to arrive punctually. Please also have a discussion with your children as there are some instances where children have identified their parents now knowing they were at Pizzey Park in the first place.
We appreciate your ongoing support in helping us maintain strong attendance and a focused start to the school day.
Until next fortnight

“Learning Like a Superhero—Growing, Trying, and Never Giving Up!”
1. Growing Brains and Owning Mistakes
Have you ever worn your superhero cape and tried something new—like tying your shoes or painting a picture? Sometimes things are tricky at first, but that’s okay! Superheroes know that when something feels hard, it’s just a chance to grow. That’s what Carol Dweck calls a growth mindset: believing that brains can grow with practice and trying new ways Stanford NewsWikipedia.
- Why it matters: Kids with a growth mindset don’t worry when things are hard—they see mistakes as chances to learn. They try again with different ideas and feel proud when they learn something new Stanford NewsBing Nursery School.
2. Smart Praise: Praising Effort, Not Just Results
If someone says, “You’re so smart!” it might feel nice. But smart superheroes know effort is even cooler! Dweck’s research shows that when children hear praise like, “Wow, you tried really hard—and look what you did!” they choose new challenges instead of giving up Bing Nursery SchoolWikipedia.
That’s because they learned that working hard and trying new things helps them grow.
3. Stick-to-It Attitude: What Is “Grit”?
Now, here’s another superpower: it’s called grit! That’s a big word for stick-to-it-iveness—like trying again and again at a puzzle until all the pieces fit. Angela Duckworth found that kids and grown-ups with grit—who love big goals and keep going even when it's tough—often do really well, even better than people who are just “naturally smart” Wikipedia+1.
4. Why Grit and Growth Mindset Are Teamwork
When you have a growth mindset, you know that trying and learning from mistakes helps your brain grow. That gives you the energy to keep going, even if something is hard—that’s grit! Together, they help super learners—people who don’t give up and find new ways to win.
5. What Parents Can Do to Help
Here are some fun, easy ways for parents to help little superheroes build these superpowers:
- Praise the process, not just the outcome
Say things like, “You really kept trying until you got it—that’s awesome!”, instead of just saying “You’re so smart.” This helps kids link success to effort and strategies Bing Nursery SchoolParents. - Talk about “not yet”
If your child says, “I can’t do it,” gently reply, “Not yet—that means you’re learning.” It reminds them that learning is always ongoing Wikipedia. - Share your own stories
Share times when you tried something new and didn’t get it on the first try—then how you kept going and learned. That shows kids they’re not alone in the journey ConniehurstParents. - Offer challenges and celebrate learning
Let kids try a tricky puzzle or learn a new song. It’s okay if they don’t get it right away—cheer for their effort, for asking for help, for trying again. - Build that “stick-to-it” strength
Encourage perseverance by celebrating when they keep going—proudly say, “You kept going when it was tricky—that’s real grit!”
Why All This Helps Kids Shine
When little superheroes practice growth mindset and grit:
- They keep going—even when things are tricky.
- They feel brave enough to try new things.
- They learn that mistakes are just chances to grow.
- They build confidence by seeing that effort really matters.
So let's ask our little ones today: "What did your brain grow when you tried something new?" And tell them, “You’re growing, learning, and being brave—just like a superhero!”

Well done to Taj playing for QLD U/12 AFL due to the age U/12 Taj has represented as high as the pathway allows due to the emphasis on participation in the sport. He also had the opportunity to speak to our local news reporter about the competition and did so with such confidence. Well Done Taj!

Miami Mavericks Flag Football:
It’s been a busy term our 10 Flag Footballers. Coaches began trials in term 2 and found it very difficult to select a team from the 50+ students that came down to have a go. Mr Stephens & Mr Crilly will be heading up to the Sunshine Coast for the 12U State Championships on Monday 25th August. In the lead up players have faced off against a mixed Miami Barbarians Team as an exhibition match and also showed their talent against their very own parents/siblings. Luckly all parents were able to walk from the field at fulltime, however, some may have organised an ice bath that evening. We wish the team all the best and thanks our coaches for volunteering their time to give our students an opportunity to not only represent their school but also experience a brand new sport.
Gala 3:
Tuesday 2nd September we will have out final 'Sport Gala Days' for Year 5 & 6 students. These events will be organised for some of our surrounding primary schools to participate in, with the idea of creating a friendly competition. The activities will consist of Tennis (mixed mini red ball), Rugby League, Oztag, Netball (mixed), Soccer, Ultimate Frisbee (mixed). (Please note if there is wet weather, then alternate dates will be Thursday 5th September). The day is designed to focus highly on participation allowing students to experience team sports with their peers in a friendly format against local primary schools.
Parents vs Miami Mavericks – The Grudge Match of the Century!
Tuesday afternoon, Miami’s NFL Flag field transformed into the scene of the ultimate showdown: the mighty Miami Mavericks versus their fiercest rivals yet – their own parents.
From the opening whistle, it was clear our Mavericks were up against it. With our star quarterback unavailable, the team had to improvise, and the parents immediately seized the upper hand. Their secret weapon? Height. Lots of it. Our defence had to quickly figure out how to shut down towering passes that looked more like basketball alley-oops than football plays.
But if the parents thought this was going to be easy, they underestimated the grit (and cheeky competitiveness) of their kids. The Mavericks’ defence scrambled, hustled, and adjusted until they were swatting down passes like seasoned pros. The parents, meanwhile, showed off some surprisingly nimble moves — though the occasional puffed cheek and hands-on-knees moment gave away who really needed a breather.
The scoreboard ticked along in a tight tussle, but in the end, the parents edged out a 6–4 victory. Thankfully, no injuries were recorded — though a few parents may have needed a good lie down afterwards.
While the Mavericks didn’t quite get the win, they scored big in fun, teamwork, and bragging rights for putting their parents to the test. The grudge match was less about competition and more about creating memories, laughter, and maybe just a tiny reminder that next year, the kids will be taller, faster, and ready for revenge.
Final score: Parents 6 – Mavericks 4.

6P have been learning about Transferring and Transforming Energy
Energy, the thing that powers so much of our world. The students of 6P have been experimenting with and learning about the different types of energy and how they can transfer and transform through objects.
As you can see in these photos, we are testing what are ‘conductors’ and ‘insulators’ in everyday life, using basic circuits to power light bulbs, motors and buzzers. This is preparing us for our assessment where we will create a buzzer game that we will be able to play with our classmates.
We love creating circuits and using our imagination throughout these sessions.
